Materials Needed:

  • Sweatshirt
  • Fabric scraps in various colors (I used 4 fabrics for each star)

  • Iron
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Fabric pencil or marker
  • Fusible interfacing
  • Pins
  • Applique foot (optional)

Step 1: Create the 8 pointed star template.  (Attached here is the template we used which is a diamond shape). I used raw edge applique, for turned applique, you will need to add a seam allowance.

Template for 8 pointed star

To create the your own 8 pointed star template, start by drawing a large square on a piece of paper. Using a ruler, draw a line diagonally from the top left corner to the bottom right corner of the square. Repeat this on the opposite side, creating an "X" shape. Next, draw a line from the top right corner to the bottom left corner of the square, and repeat on the opposite side. This will create a star shape. Cut out the star template and set it aside.

Step 2: Iron a piece of fusible (enough for 4 diamonds per fabric) onto each of your four fabrics.

Step 3: Cut the fabric scraps Using the template, cut out eight identical pieces of fabric in different colors per shoulder.  So 16 pieces altogether.

Step 4: Remove the backing from each piece and position onto the shoulders insuring that your diamond edges don't go into the neckline.    Press the stars onto the shoulder. Tip: I used a wool pressing mat and used pins to easily make the sweatshirt stay in position while I pressed.

Step 5: Attach the star to the sweatshirt. Note:  I used my applique/open toe embroidery footfor this which has a clear attachment, making it easy to see what I'm doing as I topstitch. We sell this in our 32 piece set.

Sew around the edges of the star. I used a topstitch and went around each diamond to secure.  You could also use a zig zag stitch.  Tip: Using the freearm of your machine helps to keep the fabric from bunching up underneath as you want the shoulder to still be free from stitching both sides together.
